The Building Project: One Month In

About a month ago, we launched our campaign for the Building Project. We've outgrown our current school building and urgently need to buy land and start building a new school for our students. In October of 2017, the landowner we rent from asked us to move our temporary classrooms from the side of the building to the rooftop... so that leads us to where we are now with over 100 kids crammed together in 7 classrooms on a tiny roof. And not to mention, rainy season in Haiti starts in just a few short months. Rainy season + rooftop = EEK!

First, let us just say, we are so beyond thankful for the $40,000 (AHH!!) that has already been donated via our GoFundMe page toward this project. The support of our friends and family is incredible.

That being said, we still need more funding. We have a big huge giant number of $800,000 as our overall campaign goal. But for right now, we're focusing on raising an additional $125,000 to complete phase one: buy property.

As you can imagine, we're learning a ton about Haitian real estate in this process. There is so much to consider when considering where to buy...

  • How far from the main road is it?
  • Is it accessible via car or motorcycle?
  • Does it already have a perimeter wall (these are surprisingly extremely expensive to install)?
  • Can we work around the existing trees and vegetation, or do we need to do any removal?
  • How far is it from where the majority of our students currently live?
  • Is there or could there be access to water?
  • Is the land in a good spot to eventually set up internet?
  • How many people own the land?
  • Does the landowner(s) have their paperwork?

Our latest discovery of land (see the photos below), was recommended by one of our student's parents and has a lot of potential. It's near the current school. There is a small building and bathroom on the property we can renovate to give us a jump start on building. There is also a perimeter wall already installed that just needs some small repairs.

If you've already given to the campaign, thank you. Please spread the word and share our story with your friends and family. We will continue to give updates and share the progress of the project with you!

From $20 to $20,000, all gifts, large or small, will work together to make a huge difference in the education and futures of these precious kiddos. Published August 2, 2015.

Runners, walkers and volunteers enjoyed another beautiful sunny day to support the work at ANA Primary School.  Student art work, Kozefò merchandise and handmade soap were the new additions this year! (Thanks Jim for the Haitian inspired Toasted Coconut Lime Verbena!)

10 students were selected for sponsorship-YEA! 30ish are still waiting, so check them out on our website if you are interested: http://www.kozefo.org/sponsor/

And the results are in for the 4th annual Kozefò 5K…

total Runners-Walkers registered: 90

total volunteers: 35

money raised: $4000

Overall participation and money raised may be a bit down from last year [guessing that many summer vacationers were still out of town] but that did not stop the FUN!  I am always humbled by the loyalty and generosity of others. My fav part of the day is making rounds to check in with the variety of folks that show up – cousins and in-laws, work colleagues, family friends, church members, schoolmates and the guy that won it was a returning runner just looking to support a good cause!

Thank you to you all!

The 3rd annual Kozefò 5K is wrapped up for another year. Each year I am incredibly humbled by the kindness and generosity of others, as they come on out to support the work we are doing in Haiti. We had family, friends, a big crew from the the Sartell area, Woodbury Community Church members, Saint Paul Public School employees, and our returning adult male winner that just came to run a 5K and support a good cause.  The money raised from this event goes directly into the general funds for running our Primary School in Port au Prince and the jewelry sales profit goes to the artisans at The Apparent Project. Huge shout out to Doreen for taking the lead as 5K Coordinator, to Scott for running the registration and t-shirt sales, Ann for keeping the finances in order, Jim for running the sound system and coordinating crossing guards, Liz for selling the jewelry and Eric Ramsdall with the Woodbury Police Department for their support. We had folks setting up and posting route signs, there were crossing-guards, a registration team and a crew running the water stop. This event could not happen without all of these fantastic volunteers! Thank you, thank you thank you!

**And a special bonus is that the 5K was won by a native Haitian!  JP Schlecht crossed the finish line first this year!!

Total Runners/Walkers Registered: 167

Total Volunteers (a little overlap, as some volunteers also ran or walked): 52

Money Raised: $5540

Profit – Net Total: $4,549.22!

Plus…we raised nearly $2000 for The Apparent Project with jewelry and Christmas ornament sales that will go directly to the artisans in Haiti.

In addition to the funds donated…we also raised awareness to the needs of education in Haiti.  There were conversations and insight shared that brought to light the work being done at A New Arrival Center-Primary School. To continue the work, please consider sponsoring a student!  Check out Kozefò at kozefo.org for more information. School begins on September 6th…planning to open a third classroom this fall!
